Okay, so, last Friday night, we were supposed to get a) very cold temperatures; b) 1″, MAYBE 2 at most, of snow, and c) the snow was supposed to be light and fluffy.
Um …. no. No to a), no to b), no to c), and no to the question “Do the Columbus weatherfolk know what the HELL they’re talking about?!?” (Sigh.)
Over 4 more inches. Wet, thick, heavy, and again, with a layer of ice underneath, this time ’cause the first half-inch or so melted, then refroze. And yes – it is snowing as we speak. And yes, the first of it froze, so there’s a layer of ice underneath.
I’m waiting for Bill Murray to show up with the news truck any second. 😉
So for those of you who have had your New Year, I hope it was a fun and festive event. For you yet to get there, may the New Year bring you all your hopes and dreams. And to all my readers, I really hope to see you guys soon. But there’s snow in the forecast later in the week.

Sounds just like our forecasters here in Oz, except for the snow of course. 🙂
We are well into New Years Day here and as usual hot and steamy, maybe a storm or some rain later if we are lucky, to cool things down a bit for the night.
It looked like you guys had great weather for the fireworks shoot. I loved the televised “lips” – weird, but fascinating! And I got to see a brief glimpse of my favourite Aussie songbird, Kylie, chanting the countdown with the crowd, so I got a little present, too! 😀
Hope things cool down for you. If you want, I could probably ship you a few dozen pounds of snow – free! Just to get RID of the ….. stuff. 😉
Dr. Who is back, but they’re just replaying two/three year old stuff I’ve already seen, including an episode with Kylie as a guest star. Good looking young lady.

I feel so guilty for whining about the “kind of chilly wind” we got yesterday. Wishing lots of warm socks and some serious snow thaw for you & the wife!
I am SERIOUSLY looking forward to some sunshine, it’s been cloudy since Christmas! And no worries about the chilly wind – I know the further south you go the thinner the blood gets. 😉

There is a REALLY sad bit of truth in your statement. We get one of our hometown stations, WGN, on our satellite package. Their weatherman (the great Tom Skilling – seriously, the dude is both smart AND right) is more often right for us than our “local” Columbus stations are. I think we’re gonna get our forecasts from him, from now on! (You just take his forecast, and add a day, so it’s easy for old minds…. 😀 )
So maybe hell hath frozen over!
Don’t know, haven’t checked the Michigan weather lately. I do think they got freezing rain over in Intercourse, PA….. 😯 😀

Why I remember back in ’54, the snow was up to the telephone lines and I walked up hill both ways to school. Oops wrong lecture.
Careful, dude. I remember ’67 when the snow was up to the second floor windows! We couldn’t walk to school – heck, we couldn’t walk out our DOOR! My sister and I dug tunnels into the back yard, never seeing daylight. So that stuff DOES happen! 😀
We’re up over 50 cm of snow since Dec 25, all of it fluffy and fun, then it turned cold (-13 C) and sunny. Up here that means you go to work, school and continue living as normal, except you’re dressed in a parka and boots. The fluffy fun Christmas snow is now concrete and squeaks like styrofoam packing peanuts underfoot. Winter, Canada. Tuesday. All the same. .
Snow I could handle. (See my response to Tom above.) It’s the dang ice underneath, makes driving AND walking downright hazardous! It’s not too bad on snow quantities this year – two or three years ago, we had so many days of snow, the piles in front of our house were over 10 feet tall! I was shoveling the crap two or three times, to clear out space for more that was falling. Oy!
I actually miss our Chicago snows. The snow was often like what you describe, very light and fluffy, especially in the bitter cold of January. (0 degrees F were common, -20s usually hit for several days.) The stuff we get here is thick and wet, and a royal PAIN! But, such is life. 🙂

Oh, I love the concept of the weatherman, and especially his accuracy. Could you imagine doing any REAL job with the same accuracy rate? Heck, even baseball players have to it more of the time!
Happy New Year John! Better late than never! I never listen to forecasts anymore – I look out the window when I get up to see what the weather is doing.
Yeah, I’m pretty much giving up on the local yutzes. I had been averaging Accuweather and Weather Channel to get a forecast, but I think I’m gonna go back to Tom Skilling. He may be 3 states over, but he beats the snot out of the competition! 😀
How do you discover whether someone has or has not commented before? Want to share an oldtimer’s moment? I turned my keyboard off yesterday! Didn’t know how I’d done it or how to restart it. Thankfully, I sleep with my tech-support.
I don’t know how the clever folk do it – I just see if I have to “Approve” the comment, and assume the person is new if I have to approve it.
You turned your keyboard off? Dang, I’m not sure I could figure out how to do that! Maybe sometime I’ll share the tale of how a buddy and I got into trouble in the “computer lab” at my high school. It involved a DEC mini-computer, 3 Teletypes, and one panic stricken student. 😀
It was minus two this morning. Without the wind chill. I have the heat cranked, I’m wearing a sweater and a huge quilt and I’m still cold. Gah!

Youch! Couple of cheap hints for ya. Cardboard, from cardboard boxes (the corrugated kind) makes great cheap insulation. Just stand boxes up against the wall – it helps. If your windows leak air, you can get one of those “tape and stretch” plastic kits you heat with a hair dryer to make clear – OR – go to the auto department in Wal-mart. They have rolls of “static cling” tinted plastic. You wet down the inside of the window, then lay this stuff against the glass and squeegee out the air. It holds to the glass, and it heats up with sunshine – it was 20 degrees outside with sunshine, and our ancient windows were VERY warm to the touch on the plastic. Great stuff!
