My Thanksgiving Gift – A Bit Early.

I’m sure some of you will have family shindigs to attend tomorrow, and others far braver than I will be engaging in that no-holds-barred warfare known as holiday shopping. So here’s my Thanksgiving salute to one and all, whether you celebrate it or not.

So many times, these posts plod over well-trodden ground. “Be thankful for your family. Be thankful for your health. Be thankful for what you have.” I wanted  do something a bit different, and also engage folks celebrating other holidays, and those outside the US as well.

A while back, I heard a phrase that has really stuck with me. “First World Crises”. Not major catastrophes, but those things that we take as huge annoyances in our lives. The crises of getting stuck in traffic or at the airport. The crisis of not getting that Black Friday purchase you wanted, or having to slog through web pages trying to find it. The crisis of having to actually sit with relatives, with whom you share nothing but blood. The crisis of having last year’s cellphone, of driving a used clunker car, of trying to cook the perfect holiday meal (for us in the US – gluttony is mandatory tomorrow!). We bitch and moan about these things as barriers to our true happiness.

No, I’m not gonna club you over the head with tales from post-typhoon Philippines, or post-supermarket-collapse Latvia, or the Hellish chaos that is engulfing Africa. I just want to give the gift of perspective. Yeah, getting stuck in traffic sucks, but you have a comfortable car to be stuck in, rather than pedaling a bicycle through the mud. Yeah, holiday shopping  is a huge pain in the butt, but you have a job to give you the money to get those goodies. You get the idea.

So,  please, take a moment to just …. live. Enjoy where you are, enjoy who you’re with, enjoy where you live. Because, trust me, you could be FAR worse off.

To all my readers, whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, a very Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

    Happy Thanksgiving to you.

I can only be thankful if I have things to complain about. Thanks for all the goods ideas. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

    • Hey, I never said all the things you’re grateful for had to be positive. I’m not wild about either my lame hip or my habit of talking to myself out loud, but they ALWAYS grant me a clear passage through crowds!
Happy Turkey Day, you old turkey! 😉

I was thinking about the Philippine crisis just before reading this post … so thanks for cementing my idea. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Tamy!

You’re absolutely right, John. I will be thankful that I am able to do all the work for Thanksgiving Dinner again this year. And I will mean it!

Happy T-Day to you, too John.

    • What?!? HERESY!!! The Queen must prepare her OWN Thanksgiving meal? Oh, give me your Royal Warrant, my liege, and I will ensure that Your Majesty need never lift a finger ever again! To arms! TO ARMS! (Yeah, I’ve got two arms, what about it? 😉 )

Actually, this year I had a whole lot of help. And those who didn’t help are now cleaning up. It’s a peaceable queendom. Hope yours was nice, too.

    Happy Thanksgiving John. Excellent reminder

The same to you, John. I was grumpy about the thought of a long trek for a short visit, but really . . . a couple of days with family is worth it. Even with pregnancy bladder!

  7. You are right!
We give too much for granted, way too much. I’m learning to whine less about my so called problems.
Long ago I saw something in internet that marked me forever, about things going wrong and the chance to always get worse.
Now I always say “Things are bad, but at least you don’t have a fox behind you”, nobody gets it, but I know what I’m talking about.

Happy Thanksgiving John! How do you celebrate this holiday? Friends, family, turkey, TV dinners? As a Canadian we celebrated our Thanksgiving over a month ago and since we live so far away from all our family, it’s always just the 2 of us & a turkey while we watch TV. We still do a turkey, we just freeze half of it once it’s cooked for leftovers down the road.

BTW, I have been supporting the cause to ban shopping on Thanksgiving in the States because I think we have to draw the line somewhere on the greed of retailers & the loss of family time.

    Same to you my friend.

How terribly insightful, even if I’m terribly late saying it. 😉
